Historic downtown Grass Valley is the hub of the community and is an open invitation for strolling and exploring its beautiful Victorian era homes, unique shops, boutiques and award winning restaurants. Residents and visitors alike can enjoy Gold Country history, beautiful lakes, rivers, mountains, and a variety of cultural and recreational activities not common in small towns. The big, rich underground hard rock mines of the Grass Valley area made it the wealthiest mining community in California. Even during the Great Depression of the 1930’s, there was no Depression in Grass Valley because of the thriving mine-based economy. The legacy of the early Western Nevada County settlers is still very evident today in many of the areas homes, businesses, parks, museums and other historical treasures.
